”Green” Becomes Organic Part of the Architectural Design Workflow

by Artvisualizer Press Media Sunday, May 17, 2009

Graphisoft, the global leader in Virtual Building™ solutions, today announced Graphisoft EcoDesigner™, a building energy evaluation tool for ArchiCAD 12. Graphisoft EcoDesigner is an integrated, easy–to-use energy evaluation tool for architects. Enables architects to control the energy consumption of their buildings, and sets new standards in sustainable design, making ArchiCAD the leading software solution for contemporary architectural demands. With this software, architects will have easy access to much needed energy information concerning their project in the early design phase, as opposed to relying on outside professionals to analyze the buildings when the design is well advanced and decisions are irreversible.

“The majority of design decisions influencing a building’s energy performance are made by the architect in the early design phase,” said Miklos Szovenyi-Lux, Vice President of Graphisoft Product Management. “At later design phases, engineers can only make adjustments by applying special building materials and mechanical systems. Graphisoft EcoDesigner provides architects with a unique easy-to-use tool in their native design environment to make energy-conscious decisions even during the early phase of the design.”

The Graphisoft EcoDesigner will start shipping by the end of May. If you are interested in a product demonstration, please visit the Graphisoft Booth #1551 at the 2009 AIA Convention.

About Graphisoft:

More about EcoDesigner

EcoDesigner released at the end of May, is a Graphisoft add-on software module to its award-winning BIM application ArchiCAD. What primarily sets this application apart is that it works directly inside ArchiCAD, thereby eliminating the need to export BIM data out to another software package in order to obtain feedback on the design with respect to energy.

01 - EcoDesigner works in tandem inside ArchiCAD providing the architect immediate and quick feedback on energy efficiency that fits into the normal iterative process of architectural design.

Beyond that convenience, EcoDesigner itself was conceived as an energy analysis tool for designers, not engineers. Viktor Varkonyi marked that architects using ArchiCAD are the primary audience for EcoDesigner. As such there was a lot of emphasis on making the product easy to use, simple to implement and fast. The idea is to make it fast for the architect designing the building to compare his design against other design options.

With a single click EcoDesigner can provide a PDF report on energy use with a given building design providing the user with key values, energy consumption and a building’s carbon footprint. In testing the solution EcoDesigner produced results within 8 percent accurancy of a buildings actual energy use.

ArchiCAD has been designed by architects for architects, and over the years it has gradually become more and more refined to allow its users to better:

* Focus on design,
* Manage change,
* Evaluate design alternatives,
* Collaborate,
* Coordinate.

From this you can extract all the information needed to completely describe your design - complete plans, sections and elevations, architectural and construction details, Bills of Quantities window/door/finish schedules, renderings, animations and virtual reality scenes. That means while you're designing, ArchiCAD is creating all the project documentation so there's little repetitive and tedious drafting work. The Virtual Building™ approach also means that you can make changes at any time maintaining the integrity of your documents, without risking costly errors or costing you productivity.
