Tutorial: Combining Bump and Normal Maps in Maya

by Artvisualizer Press Media Monday, May 04, 2009

Hi all...
here's a simple tip, which is something that I get asked a lot, and remember that when I had to figure it out it took me a little while. Say you have a normal map created in Zbrush, but then want to add more detail to the model in Maya via bump maps (created in Maya, Photoshop, wherever):
Basically you can do this... apply your bump map to your shader as you normally would, then output the normal map's bump node to the bump map's bump node (MMB drag). The order does make a difference for some reason, so again... normal outputs to bump, bump outputs to material. The only trick here, is that the 'normal camera' attribute on the bump node is 'hidden' by default, so in the connection editor, you need to set it to display hidden attributes. Silly. heh. But it works.
