Autodesk® Toxik™ Review

by Artvisualizer Press Media Monday, May 04, 2009

Autodesk® Toxik™ software is a node-based digital compositing and visual effects solution with advanced image processing capabilities. The software’s architecture is built around its ultra-high resolution interaction and high dynamic range imaging (HDRI) core, which allows you to work interactively and intuitively with virtually any visual media, regardless of bit depth or image size.

With its intuitive toolsets, open architecture, and high level of interoperability with Autodesk® Maya® software, Toxik is the ideal compositor for independent 2D visual effects artists to large-scale film and broadcast facilities.

Overview

Autodesk® Toxik™ software brings compositing and visual effects tools to high-end 2D effects artists working at HD, 2K, 4K or above, in film, television, and design. When combined with Autodesk® Maya ® 2009 software, the two products together create a highly efficient, iterative, and collaborative environment that accelerates everyday workflows and facilitates the addition of an extra dimension to 2D imagery. The Toxik high dynamic range (HDR) creative toolset includes keying, color correction, tracking, camera mapping, paint, spline-based warping, motion blur, and depth of field.

Paint
Retouch images and mattes. Work with unlimited layers, reveals, clones, blend modes, and custom brushes. See your painted results immediately in-context with your composition and get your effects work finished faster. Painted frames are automatically shared and usable by all Toxik collaborators, even on remote workstations.

3D Control
Reaction—the 3D compositing super tool—and the software’s animation editors help you to create your compositions with speed and precision. The unique Toxik gestural user interface paradigm streamlines the process of manipulating elements within the 3D environment. Relevant information and common commands are quickly accessible in the curve and track editors, streamlining the animation process.

Interoperability
Automatically generate and update compositions based on Render Layer and Render Pass setups provided by Autodesk Maya. Create 32-bit OpenEXR images in Maya or Autodesk® 3ds Max® software and then easily bring them in and manipulate them within Toxik for realistic color and lighting details. Toxik delivers support for interoperating with many industry-standard applications.

Image Processing
Quickly and precisely control the look of your image with a wide range of effects and workflow tools, including warping and lens distortion, dust removal, filters, grain/degrain, slate tools, and more.
Data Management
Effectively manage your project data. Toxik features efficient archiving of media and composition files for backup, offline, and near-line storage. Intelligent dependency tracking allows compositions to be restored with alternative paths, giving you flexibility in managing storage and workstation resources. Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path support enables you to access files and directories across your entire network. A hierarchical bookmarking system makes links to footage, projects, and compositions easy to save and access.

Color Correction
The histogram and Photo Lab interactive HDR color correctors, along with a host of color management tools, give you better control over exposure settings as well as shadow and highlight details—so you can work with images more efficiently.

Keying and Rotoscoping
Get precise keying results, quickly. The intelligently designed Toxik keying toolset, including the Keyer Super Tool, combines sophisticated keying technology with an intuitive, easy-to-use interface.

Advanced 2D Tracking
High-speed, interactive tracking technology enables fast, smooth image stabilization and seamless matching of elements to moving objects.

High-Quality Renders
Create unsurpassed 2D and 3D renders using the Toxik software renderer, with its proprietary Jinc filter. Support for network rendering and the Autodesk® Backburner® render management system give you the ultimate in efficiency when it comes time to render.

Smart Collaboration
Collaborate with confidence. The Toxik file-based data model, including versioning functionality, enables you to keep track of multiple iterations of a file; plus, the software can be set up to notify team members working simultaneously on linked compositions within a project when updates are made by another user.

Extensibility
Work the way you want. Complete support for the OpenFX application programming interface (API) and integrated Python® scripting language enables you to customize and extend Toxik to fit seamlessly into your pipeline.
